Whether bogeyman or Father Whipper, the folklore of Père Fouettard is a cautionary tale originating in 1252, where an innkeeper and his wife targeted three wealthy boys for robbery. After the boys were poisoned and killed, St. Nicholas, the patron saint of children, resurrected them and cursed the innkeeper. As punishment, the innkeeper was transformed into Père Fouettard, destined to serve St. Nicholas and punish misbehaving children. This folklore, while intended as a cautionary tale, raises questions about its origins and the need for such frightening stories in teaching children.
