Since the mid-1800s, Victorians were excited with the new tradition of decorating a tree in their homes. Although ornaments were at first space—tinsel, wire ornaments, candles, and beads—one of the crowning highlights was to place an angel at the top of the tree. An obvious representation of the Angel visiting Mary before the Three Kings’ pilgrimage, today’s tree topper—or finial—has taken to elegant and ornate depictions from everything from angels and snowmen to ornamental patterns.
