With incredible detail, this Nantucket Santa is holding the famous nested Nantucket Baskets in his hand while his coat is decorated from both needlework and historical family tree records found from the historical museum. With subtle nautical imagery combined with a delicate floral pattern, the Nested Nantucket Basket Santa is perfect for anyone that finds solitude at any beach over the summer.
The historical brush (see image below) with history focuses on the family register of Alexander Folger and Rebecca Folger. The original watercolor can be seen in the collection of the Nantucket Historical Association at the Whaling Museum. The folk style has been identified as the Vine and Heart design.
The resource for the whaling scene on the back of the coat is from an overmantel painting in the collection of the Peabody Essex Museum.
This Santa is completed by holding a nest of Nantucket baskets.
We can imagine that Rebecca Folger executed the family register while her husband was aboard the Lightship. Alexander’s skilled trade as a cooper also prepared him at sea to weave not only a single Nantucket basket but a highly technical set of nesting baskets. Santa Nr. 5 tells a probable folk tale of the life of a Nantucket family at home and on the sea.
