Gerald Charles Dickens

Charles Dickens, the world-renowned English novelist, had a deep love for performing on stage. During his American tours in 1842 and again from 1867 to 1868, he traveled extensively by stagecoach and railroad, thrilling standing-room-only crowds with his dramatic readings—particularly of A Christmas Carol, which became his signature performance.

Among his ten children was Henry Fielding Dickens, a distinguished barrister who was knighted in 1922. Sir Henry Fielding Dickens had seven children, including Gerald Charles Dickens, who would rise to prominence in his own right.

This first Sir Gerald Dickens, Charles Dickens’ grandson, served with distinction in the Royal Navy, eventually attaining the rank of Admiral. Like his father, he too was knighted—receiving this honor in 1937. Sir Gerald Dickens had three sons; the youngest was David Dickens.

David Dickens followed in the family tradition of public service, beginning his career in the Royal Navy before transitioning to the world of publishing. Along with his wife Betty, he co-authored Christmas with Dickens in 1993, a tribute published for the 150th anniversary of A Christmas Carol. He also served multiple terms as President of the worldwide Dickens Fellowship, an organization dedicated to preserving and celebrating the literary legacy of his great-grandfather.

David and Betty’s youngest child is Gerald Charles Dickens, the present-day actor, writer, and performer who continues this extraordinary lineage.

In 1996, Gerald Charles Dickens embarked on his first American Holiday Tour, introducing audiences to a one-man performance of A Christmas Carol that is as captivating as it is reverent. From the moment he utters the haunting opening line, “Marley is dead,” Gerald breathes life into all 26 characters of the classic story. Through powerful storytelling, emotional range, and a mastery of Dickensian prose, he transforms history, literature, and biography into an unforgettable theatrical experience.

Today, Gerald Charles Dickens travels each year across the United States, delighting audiences of all ages at historic venues, libraries, theatres, and Dickens festivals. Whether seen in an intimate setting or grand auditorium, his performance continues to be a cherished holiday tradition.

Generations of families gather to witness this remarkable artist, often described as “the man with a top hat and a legacy.” With each performance, he pays homage to his great-great-grandfather’s enduring spirit, ensuring that the wonder and message of A Christmas Carol continue to inspire audiences around the world.
