Renowned redware potter Ned Foltz, a steward of Pennsylvania German traditions, introduced Judi Vaillancourt to the art of dyeing Easter eggs with onion skins—a natural technique that dates back generations. Using the papery layers of onions and seasonal herbs, this method creates richly marbled eggs that are then etched to reflect the beauty of handcrafted folk art. Judi embraced this tradition wholeheartedly and continues to create onion skin eggs each Easter, celebrating the heritage it represents. Much like her chalkware, each egg is a one-of-a-kind expression of history, artistry, and seasonal joy.

Today, you’ll find the Onion Skin Eggs in many of Judi’s chalkware rabbits during spring. Including here, where this charming brown and white rabbit is seen pulling a cart with a rooster on top. Trailing behind? Three onion skins eggs!
