Inspired by the thrilling yet perilous whaling expeditions of the 19th century, this Santa embodies the spirit of the Nantucket Sleigh Ride – the name whalers gave to the high-speed ride as their small boats were towed by a harpooned whale. Designed by Judi Vaillancourt after the success of the first Nantucket Santa, this piece integrates historic whaling logs and scrimshaw artistry throughout his coat and staff, with detailed reproductions of authentic documents and engraved imagery depicting the dramatic Sleigh Ride itself. In his sack, he carries a reindeer with wire antlers alongside the Jared Coffin House, one of Nantucket’s most important historic buildings. By blending the maritime heritage of scrimshaw carving and Nantucket’s whaling history with the enduring warmth of Santa Claus, this chalkware piece tells a timeless story of courage, craftsmanship, and tradition through fine art designed to be cherished for generations.
