Christmas Museum

Explore the Christmas Museum at the Vaillancourt Experience in Sutton, MA—featuring antique chocolate moulds, chalkware history, and global Christmas traditions. […]

As part of the Vaillancourt Experience, the Christmas Museum offers a deeper understanding of the history, artistry, and traditions that inspire our work.

Within its walls, thousands of antique chocolate moulds are on display—each serving as a time capsule of Christmas traditions and cultural storytelling. These historic moulds, many dating to the 19th and early 20th centuries, reflect how different regions and generations have interpreted the imagery of the season. Since 1984, Judi Vaillancourt has drawn from these sources, using both antique and original moulds as the foundation for her work.

The museum also presents the evolution of Vaillancourt itself. With over 3,000 designs created across four decades, visitors can trace how each figure reflects a moment in time—shaped by history, craftsmanship, and artistic interpretation. From early “folk art” works to more refined contemporary pieces, the collection offers a rare perspective on the development of what we define today as fine art chalkware.

Throughout the museum, this story is placed within a broader context. Displays include our German and Polish glass ornaments, Classical Christmas Creamware, and a selection of rare and one-of-a-kind works, including early sculptural pieces such as chess sets and Noah’s Ark. Together, these collections illustrate both the diversity of Christmas traditions and the evolution of our own artistic journey.

The Christmas Museum is continually evolving, with new additions and rotating displays that reflect both historical discovery and ongoing creativity. Whether experienced through a guided or self-guided visit, it offers an opportunity to step beyond the finished piece and explore the traditions, influences, and craftsmanship that bring it to life.
