JCV Original, Hunched Gingerbread Santa (One of a Kind)

Hand-painted by Judi Vaillancourt in 2007, this one-of-a-kind chalkware Santa stands as a remarkable piece of Vaillancourt Folk Art history. Created immediately after the design of the original Hunched Gingerbread Santa, this prototype served as the creative study for what would later become the celebrated Hunched Gingerbread in Red.

Now part of the Vaillancourt Museum Vault Collection, this early prototype captures Judi’s instinctive artistry and her exploration of color, texture, and ornamentation. The piece features the classic “hunched” posture, embodying the weight of a bag filled with Christmas treasures, yet exudes warmth and charm through its detailed narrative painting.

Among the charming, hidden details are a teddy bear and a Christmas flag, tucked thoughtfully into Santa’s bag — quiet nods to childhood joy and holiday patriotism. These small inclusions remind collectors of Judi’s delight in storytelling through paint, where every surface offers a discovery.

A hallmark of Judi’s work is her intricate lace detailing, and this piece showcases one of her signature white lace patterns set against the deep contrast of bold black and rich red hues.
