Santa’s dramatic coat is based on a stunning silkwork picture created in 1752 by Mary Wistar (1738-1815). Mary gifted the needlework piece and its companion piece to her great nieces in 1787. Today it is part of the Winterthur collection and considered to be a prized acquisition.

Sarah was born in 1738, never married, and worked this at the school run by Ann Marsh in Philadelphia. The Marsh school was known for teaching outstanding needlework techniques.
