Magnolia Grandiflora, about 1885–95
Martin Johnson Heade, American (1819–1904)

Some of Martin Johnson Heade’s most sensuous paintings are of magnolia blossoms, a subject he came to specialize in after moving to Florida in 1883. Our collection of “magnolia” merchandise is inspired by Magnolia Grandiflora an exquisite oil on canvas painted between 1885 and 1895.

This image adorns the coat of this chalkware Santa that was created by Judi Vaillancourt exclusively for the MFA. Vaillancourt Folk Art is one of America’s last remaining Christmas collectible makers.

Handcrafted in Massachusetts using a vintage chocolate mold, each Santa is then decorated using a combination of decoupage and hand painting to create an heirloom-quality keepsake you’re sure to delight in each holiday season.
