The inspiration for this Father Christmas stems from 1620s style—specially, the Layton jacket from the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, England and an embroidered panel from within the collection at the Embroiderers’ Guild at Hampton Court Palace.

In 2007, a group of volunteers embarked on a project to re-create a jacket at Plimoth Plantation’s Hancock Shaker Village. The final piece was introduced in 2009 after more than 3,700 hours of handwork and displayed in the fall of 2011 at Winterthur Museum.

The sack over this Father Christmas uses patterns and designs based on the piece on display.
