SUMMARY:Vaillancourt Christmas Market Cruise (Elbe River)
DESCRIPTION:Join Judi & Gary as they host a Christmas Market’s cruise & tour along Eastern Germany’s famed ELBE RIVER.  You’ll visit Saxon Switzerland; Dresden; Meissen; Wittenberg and Potsdam with hotel overnights in Prague and Berlin.  There are fabulous traditional Christmas Markets at each city.  Note: The readers of Conde Nast TRAVELER Magazine – just voted Dresden the #2 small city in the world (Nov. 2019 Conde Nast TRAVELER). Standard accommodations start at $2\,999. For more information\, please call Alden at 508-721-2601. \n*Update: As of December 15\, 2019\, there is limited availability. Please call for more details about how to book your space. \nNovember 29th\nDepart your USA Gateway via overnight connecting flight to Prague. \nNovember 30th\nArrive today in Prague and enjoy the balance of the day at leisure in the Czech Republic’s bustling capital.  The main sightseeing areas of Prague are separated by the Vltava River. On the left bank there is the Prague Castle area and Lesser Town. The right bank is home to the Old Town\, the Jewish Quarter\, and the New Town. Spanning the Vltava River and connecting the Old Town and Lesser Town is the beautiful Charles Bridge. \nDecember 1st\nThe largest and most popular markets are on the Old Town Square and Wenceslas Square. The Old Town Square Christmas market is the prettiest and busiest in Prague. Little stalls are nestled around the Jan Hus statue and surrounded by centuries-old Gothic\, Renaissance\, and Baroque architecture.  Visitors come from all over to experience the Christmas markets in Prague. Some unique products that are available at the markets are Christmas ornaments and holiday decorations\, traditional Czech Christmas cookies\, tablecloths\, Frankincense or the Czech Christmas potpourri called purpura. Some other items on offer are Czech wooden toys\, crafts\, clothing accessories\, scented candles or handmade soap. Czech Christmas carols add to the festive atmosphere. After dark\, the markets are lit up beautifully. \nDecember 2nd\nChristmas in Prague is a magical time and December is undoubtedly one of the nicest months of the year in this beautiful city. Christmas markets are up\, shop windows are bright and beautiful\, Christmas trees adorn the town squares and the early dusk is filled with warm light. People are so friendly\, and the mood is festive. All is covered in fresh\, white snow\, what more can you ask for?  Prague at Christmas is a special place\, so bundle up and take a stroll. If you get cold\, have some hot chocolate at a café\, stop by a tea room or buy a cup of mulled wine or grog from a street vendor.  You will see the signs of Christmas approaching as early as October when Czech Christmas ornaments start appearing in shop windows. Around the end of November\, Christmas markets open and a large Christmas tree is erected and lit on the Old Town Square. \nDecember 3rd\nThis morning you’ll board the Viking ASTRILD and cruise north on the ELBE River through the magnificent\, soaring rock formations of the Saxon Switzerland region\, then dock at the spa town of Bad Schandau. From here we make our way to the famous rock tower known as the Bastei (bastion)\, formed by water a million years ago\, to enjoy stunning panoramic views of the Elbe. Return on board for dinner and evening cruising. \nDecember 4th\nAfter breakfast\, disembark in Dresden\, nicknamed “Florence on the Elbe.” Drive through the 19th-century residential area to the Dresden Castle complex; enter the Green Vault to see a comprehensive collection that houses what many claims is the world’s largest collection of treasures\, including priceless jewels and emeralds. Continue\, on foot to see Zwinger Palace\, Semper Opera House and the Frauenkirche (Cathedral of Our Lady) with its distinctive bell-shaped dome that survived World War II bombings but collapsed the following day. Later\, it was rebuilt. Alternatively\, enjoy more of Dresden on one of our optional tours. Select a full-day excursion and visit Dresden’s baroque castles\, sweeping wine estates and opulent palace\, once home to royal and lavish banquets. Or\, you can visit car manufacturing giant Volkswagen\, and gain Working World insight during a tour of their state-of-the-art-facility.  Dinner is served on board your ship; after\, feel free to enjoy Dresden’s many charms and attractions as we remain docked until early morning. \nDecember 5th\nToday\, cruise the Elbe and arrive in Meissen just after lunchtime. Then stop in at the Meissenware factory\, producer of fine porcelain since the early 1700s. Discover how this trademarked porcelain is created by hand\, then tour the museum. Proceed to Castle Hill for a walking tour through Old Town. Return on board for dinner and an evening at leisure. Your ship remains docked overnight.  During Advent\, the historic Meissen market place with the late Gothic guildhall\, the Renaissance town houses and the Church of our Lady composes an atmospheric backdrop for the romantic Christmas market. In festively decorated booths the merchants offer their Christmas goods. A blaze of lights\, fir sprigs and Christmas scents create a unique flair that enchants more and more visitors every year. Whether Advent music in the Church of Our Lady\, staging’s of fairy tales in the theatre or the Christmas exhibition in the municipal museum\, you can reach everything within a few minutes’ walk from the Christmas market. During Christmas time\, the magnificent guildhall building of Meissen turns into a gigantic Advent calendar that hides 24 Christmas surprises behind its large blue shutters. These are revealed when between the 1st and 24th December every day a window is opened. \nDecember 6th\nThis morning\, follow in Martin Luther’s footsteps to view many of Wittenberg’s historic landmarks. Tour inside Luther’s House and St. Marien’s Church\, where he preached. See the Castle Church where Luther posted his “95 Theses”; then enjoy free time. Wittenberg’s Christmas market has an inimitable setting on the market square\, framed by impressive town houses and the church where Luther used to preach\, which also has a winged altar by Lucas Cranach the Elder. The historical buildings\, bathed in warm light\, give out a glow. With the festive program\, Advent here is still celebrated in full measure. Discover high quality and fantastic crafts in the city’s magnificent Cranach courtyards at the market of beautiful things and the Christmas market. \nDecember 7th\nAfter breakfast\, travel to Potsdam. Tour Sanssouci Palace\, a perfect example of German rococo architecture\, built by Prussian king Frederick the Great in the 18th century. Built as a summer retreat\, it became his personal sanctuary and place to relax in the company of his beloved dogs. Wander through the rooms of the elegant palace and stroll through the magnificent gardens.  You’ll continue to Germany’s capital – Berlin for the next two evenings. \nDecember 8th\nAfter breakfast\, enjoy a panoramic tour of the vibrant German capital\, which has seen its fair share of dramatic changes in the last century. See the Reichstag with its spectacular glass dome\, the historic Brandenburg Gate\, Checkpoint Charlie and many other iconic sites. Enjoy the remainder of your day at leisure.  There is no single Christmas market in Berlin – you can visit over 70 of them here. They range from indoor and covered to that outdoors; ones especially for children with rides and fun fairs\, to markets with historical themes. We’re sure you’ll find your favourite market! Visit one of the many different Christmas markets in Berlin and enjoy a contemplative time with the whole family. In Berlin you will find nostalgic Christmas markets as well as modern ones with carousels and attractions.  The largest is the Christmas market in the old town of Spandau. The historical Gendarmenmarkt Christmas market is very famous and one of the most beautiful\, offering stands with glassblowers\, winter delicacies and origami art during Advent. A small tent city with numerous exhibitors and stands as well as more than 1\,000 fairy lights provides a cosy ambience.  The nostalgic Christmas market at the Opernpalais has an impressive array of artisans from all over the world\, amusement rides and traditional culinary delights such as roasted almonds. At the Domäne Dahlem Advent market\, a former manor\, you will find smiths\, potters and musical instrument makers as well as a weaving mill.  You will find Christmas markets in every district and neighbourhood of Berlin – be it Alexanderplatz\, Charlottenburg\, Spandau or many other places. \nDecember 9th\nJourney home via flight.

SUMMARY:#DickensWeekend: A Christmas Carol with Gerald Charles Dickens
DESCRIPTION:Thanksgiving Weekend’s Performance of A Christmas Carol\nTickets will be sold online starting this summer. \nEach winter\, hundreds of thousands of families integrate Dickens’ masterpiece\, A Christmas Carol\, into their holiday traditions. Although there are countless versions—literary devices\, stage adaptations\, and full-length feature films—we are pleased to offer a unique experience that fits Vaillancourt’s vision of tradition: Dickens by Dickens. \nCharles Dickens made two visits to the United States\, 1848 and 1868 (which include a stop at Worcester’s Mechanics Hall)\, during these trips he performed readings of his classical masterpiece. Although we aren’t able to bring Charles back to life\, we are pleased that his great-great-grandson\, Gerald Charles Dickens\, has decided to make this tradition lives on with a theatrical\, one-man performance of A Christmas Carol. \nMr. Dickens adopts different voices\, expressions\, and mannerisms to portray each of the story’s twenty-six characters in this acclaimed one-man show. Brought to the United States each year by American Christmas company\, Byers’ Choice\, Dickens kicks off his the East Coast leg of his American tour each year since 2009 at Vaillancourt Folk Art’s Blaxton Hall theatre. \nEach performance\, approximately one hour and twenty minutes\, is not recommended for children under the age of 8 years old. After each performance\, Dickens is available to sign any of the products offered at the Vaillancourt Gallery. \nSeeing Dickens’ work\, performed by Dickens\, is truly a one of a kind tradition to remember forever. \nGary Vaillancourt introducing Gerald Charles Dickens during a performance of A Christmas Carol at Vaillancourt Folk Art in Sutton\, MA during Thanksgiving Weekend.

SUMMARY:Vaillancourt Christkindlesmarkt & Artisan Show - 2020
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate the season with a traditional German Christmas Market in the quintessential New England town of Sutton!\nPlease note that details and tickets for 2020 will be announced this spring! \nAs Vaillancourt Folk Art celebrates 35 years of traditions\, we’re pleased to present our first retail show that will feature the industries most respected and detailed artists. When Vaillancourt Folk Art first began their business\, it was through exhibiting at Artisan shows around the country. This Christkindlesmarkt & Artisan Show is a tip of the hat to our formidable years\, while being able to offer some of the highest quality American Artists within a space decorated to resemble the German Christmas markets. While the Vaillancourt Retail Gallery will import exceptionally high quality German products\, the main event is the Mass Live sponsored Artisan Retail Stalls\, built to house some of America’s finest craftspeople\, including: \n\n	\n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n Byers’ Choice \n \n\n (Chalfont\, Pennsylvania)\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n\n \n \n\n \n\n \n\n \n \n\n \n \n Their story begins in the late 1960s when founder\, Joyce Byers\, decided to make holiday decorations that reminded her of timeless family traditions and her own memories of Christmas. She created her first Carolers — using wire\, newspaper\, fabric\, and clay — on her dining room table after a trip to London where she was inspired by winter displays in shop windows. The unique appearance and handcrafted quality of the Carolers quickly gained a following. Before long\, she was making Carolers to give as gifts for friends and family and began selling them in local gift shops. Several years after Joyce started her simple quest to recreate an old-fashioned Christmas\, the Byers family hired their first employee in 1978\, and Byers Choice LTD was born. From there\, the company has grown to a team of skilled Artisans working to handcraft the Carolers and recently celebrated its 40th anniversary! To this day\, Joyce continues to design the Carolers\, creating a unique style for each line of figures. With the help from her team of artists\, thousands of Carolers are handcrafted in Bucks County\, Pennsylvania every year and are widely collected throughout the United States and beyond. They are treasured not only as collectibles but for the way they represent a simpler time and way of life. \n \n\n\n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n Dad’s Follies Antique Chocolate Molds \n \n\n (Gibsonville\, North Carolina)\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n\n \n \n\n \n\n \n\n \n \n\n \n \n Dad’s Follies is the oldest and largest antique dealer specializing in antique metal chocolate moulds in the world. For over 45 years Dad’s Follies has been specializing in buying and selling antique metal chocolate and pewter ice cream moulds and are a family owned company that is currently in its second generation of Mould Experts. They currently exhibit at private shows and offer their moulds online. \n \n\n\n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n Pamela Dalton Scherenschnitte \n \n\n (Ghent\, New York)\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n\n \n \n\n \n\n \n\n \n \n\n \n \n Pamela Dalton has been perfecting the craft of Scherenschnitte ever since discovering the craft in Europe many years ago. What began as a hobby eventually evolved into a full time career. Now\, decades later\, collectors world wide enjoy her intricate paper creations. In addition\, her work has illustrated numerous children’s books. This includes “Brother Sun\, Sister Moon” chosen by the New York Times as one of the ten most beautifully illustrated children’s books of 2011. \nCut from a single piece of paper \, her compositions incorporate traditional themes from the early 19th century . Nautical and patriotic images\, scenes from rural life\, as well as Biblical passages are favorites. \nAs seen in the tradition of papercuts from the Pennsylvania German region\, many pieces are illuminated with color. Others remain unpainted\, although they are “antiqued” to replicate the look of 19th century paper. \nHer work can be found in numerous galleries and museum shops and is available at select artisan events.\nPamela has lived in the village of Harlemville\, New York\, for nearly 40 years\, a “town with more cows than people.”She operates a studio near her home\, accompanied by two butterscotch tomcats. \n \n\n\n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n Stenciled Floorcloths by Michele \n \n\n (Hollis\, New Hampshire)\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n\n \n \n\n \n\n \n\n \n \n\n \n \n Michele Hollick has been stenciling for more than 30 years. What started as a simple “kitchen table” hobby\, blossomed into a full time business for her. She started making floorcloths when she became interested in Colonial-era furnishings and accessories. Michele has the distinction of being a Certified Stenciler through the International Group Stencil Artisans League\, Inc. Less than 100 people world-wide have passes this difficult test. Some of her best classes have been at the annual Stencil Artisans League Convention\, the Stencil Decorative Artists Guild Convention\, Sanborn Mills Farm\, the League of NH Sandwich Gallery\, as well as various shops throughout the Northeast. \n \n\n\n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n Will Moses \n \n\n (Eagle Bridge\, New York)\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n\n \n \n\n \n\n \n\n \n \n\n \n \n As a fourth generation member of the renowned Moses family\, painting is a natural tradition for Will\, who began painting when he was four years old. Encouraged by his grandfather\, a well-known folk painter in his own right\, young Will was allowed to experiment freely with paints. Forrest K. Moses was totally committed to self-expression and passed this freedom of spirit along to his young grandson. Stimulated by his grandfather’s confident approach\, Will developed his own unique style of Americana. Today\, Will continues to carry on the family tradition. Although his style is reminiscent of that of his celebrated great-grandmother\, it is more complex and sophisticated. \n \n\n\n \n\n \n \n\n	\n	\nIn addition to the Mass Live sponsored Artisan Retail Stalls\, Vaillancourt’s production studio will be transformed to an intimate indoor marketplace with The Queen’s Cups selling gingerbread and Christmas cookies and sponsored vendors showing their Christmas spirit. Outdoors\, under an open sided tent\, the Food & Beverage Pavilion will be decorated with live Christmas trees while the smells of Stillman Quality Meats‘ German Sausages mingles through the air with traditional German pastries—Apfelstrudel\, Peffernuesse\, Baumkuchen\, Spekulatius\, Hazelnut Corners\, and Schupfnudeln—sold by Fraulein’s Bakery. In addition to food available for sale\, there will be a selection of fine Christmas beers\, the 2019 limited edition Vaillancourt Christmas Wine\, and a German imported glühwein for sale—limited quantities of the glühwein collector’s mug will be available to Friday’s VIP admission! \nTrying to create a new tradition for visitors near and far\, Vaillancourt urges all out of town guests to book their rooms at the Christkindlesmarkt’s official hotel sponsor\, the Beechwood Hotel. A convenient 15-minute drive\, the Beechwood Hotel is the region’s only AAA Four Diamond rated hotel and situated in the city of Worcester. The Christmas Opening kicks off the season with the first glimpse of the decorations and the availability of purchasing the premiere numbers of the annual Starlight Santa. \nStarlight Santas\nEach year\, Judi Vaillancourt designs a special chalkware Santa with a portion of the proceeds donated to a charity focused on Children. This annual Santa is produced as a limited edition and is retired on Christmas Day (never to be produced again!). The Starlight Santa has become one of the most sought-after collectibles in the domestic Christmas market. \nPhilanthropy\nIn 1990\, Vaillancourt Folk Art partnered with a children’s foundation—a non-profit organization dedicated to helping seriously ill children and their families cope with pain\, fear\, and isolation through entertainment\, education and family activities. In 2013\, Vaillancourt Folk Art decided to have donations go directly towards Worcester’s UMass Memorial Children’s Medical Center where money is directly used to help kids get through whatever treatment they are undergoing through the Child Life’s Artist In Residence Program. SUMMARY:Inaugural Vaillancourt Christkindlesmarkt & Artisan Show
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Millbury Federal Credit Union \nCelebrate the season with a traditional German Christmas Market in the quintessential New England town of Sutton!\nPlease note that details and tickets for 2020 will be announced this spring! SUMMARY:A Vaillancourt Christmas Cruise - Christmas Markets Along The Rhine
DESCRIPTION:During 2017 Collector’s Weekend we were pleased to announce a second Christmas Cruise of Europe… many collectors from around the country joined Gary and Judi as they hosted their first Christmas Cruise in 2014. With such a great turnout Vaillancourt Folk Art is pleased to host a second cruise\, this time journeying through Switzerland to The Netherlands stopping at the Christmas Markets along the Rhine. A week later\, we’re 90% sold out\, please see the itinerary below and call Alden (508-721-2601) to hold your spot! \n \nThe holidays are pure magic along Europe’s waterways. Storybook villages and snow-capped castles line the rivers’ banks\, and in grand cities and charming towns alike\, festive Christmas markets celebrate the season with colorful crafts\, gingerbread and warm\, spicy glühwein. Come share in the Holiday Spirit\, On Shore and On Board. In medieval town squares and down cobbled lanes\, aromas of old-world family recipes waft from kitchens—hot potatoes\, chestnuts\, grilled sausages and baked treats. Market stalls offer a delightful array of hand-carved toys\, ornaments\, nutcrackers and colorful woolen scarves. Viking’s Christmas cruises help spread the cheer with onboard festivities: you can bake gingerbread cookies with our executive chef\, decorate the ship’s Christmas tree and enjoy live\, regional holiday music from a local ensemble. This holiday season\, immerse yourself in the Christmas spirit with Viking. Itinerary subject to change at the discretion of Viking Cruise Lines. \nNovember 30th – Basel\, Switzerland\nYou arrive in Basel to embark your ship. The afternoon is yours to explore the city on your own. This city on the Rhine has a very special charm in the Christmas period. The quaint Christmas market can be found on Barfusserplatz and Munsterplaz\, right in the center of the city and at the heart of the festively decorated Old Town. A magnificent Christmas tree stands on the Münsterplatz\, with ornaments by the well-known decorator Johann Wanner. Over 180 traders and artisans offer their goods for sale in small\, rustic wooden chalets. Anyone still looking for gift ideas can seek inspiration in the wide selection and enchanting ambience. Culinary delights also abound with waffles\, glühwein\, genuine Basel Läckerli (a kind of gingerbread)\, delicious Swiss raclette or the popular grilled sausages. (Dinner provided) \nDecember 1st – Breisach\, Germany\nWe arrive in Breisach this morning\, gateway to the Black Forest. Take a scenic excursion through the area’s renowned mountain landscape\, rolling meadows and dense forests. Once there\, visit a local workshop and see a cuckoo clock-making demonstration. Return to Breisach or choose an optional excursion to the quaint Alsatian town of Colmar. Dine aboard and cruise on through the night. (Breakfast\, Lunch\, and Dinner provided) \nDecember 2nd – Strasbourg\, France\nWe dock this morning in Kehl and disembark for a guided tour of Strasbourg. See the European Parliament and tour the interior of the city’s famed cathedral. Dine aboard and enjoy free time this evening in the amiable little city of Kehl. (Breakfast\, Lunch\, and Dinner provided) \nDecember 3rd – Heidelberg & Rüdesheim\, Germany\nCruise through the morning as you enjoy breakfast and the passing scenery. Arrive in Mannheim and disembark for a tour of Heidelberg to see Germany’s oldest university\, founded in 1386. Then\, visit the beautiful sandstone ruins of imposing Heidelberg Castle and take in the scenery of the Neckar River Valley and the city’s many red rooftops from this hilltop post. Continue with a walking tour through Old Town to Heidelberg’s renowned gates. After scenic afternoon cruising you’ll arrive in Rudesheim. This is a delightful town located on the banks of the Rhine – noted for its’ pedestrian only Drosselgasse. There will be plenty of opportunity to sample a glass of the town’s locally produced wine at one of the many wine bars or restaurants. An absolute must do at the Rüdesheim Christmas Market is to try some deliciously made Rüdesheim Coffee\, which is exclusively made with locally distilled Asbach Uralt Brandy\, whipped cream and traditionally served in an authentic Rüdesheim coffee set. The coffee set itself would also make a perfect gift for anyone back home. Available throughout the Rüdesheim Christmas market\, Asbach Uralt is probably one of the most popular products\, as they also make a great variety of brandy filled chocolates. Varied entertainment runs every day or you can go on a romantic river cruise. Explore the enchanting “Upper Middle Rhine Valley” from Rüdesheim on a boat trip and learn about Germany’s fairytales\, legends and Christmas traditions through spellbinding readings. For a truly stunning view of the Rhine and its sloping vineyards\, take a cable car ride up to the Niederwald recreational area. Europe’s biggest Nativity scene can also be found in Rüdesheim with life-size figures which can be admired on the market square. (Breakfast\, Lunch\, and Dinner provided) \nDecember 4th – Koblenz\, Germany\nProceed along the Rhine\, disembarking to tour the 700-year-old Marksburg Castle and its museum. Enjoy an onboard lunch as you marvel at this scenic passage\, a UNESCO World Heritage Site where castles overlook the river from their hilltop posts. The Koblenz Christmas market is one of the largest in the Rhineland-Palatinate wine growing region\, it offers all the flavors of Christmas including a Christmas bakery where stollen and many other famous German Christmas cakes and biscuits are made in front of your eyes. Every year a wealth of event highlights is planned for the Koblenz Christmas market\, all under the watchful eye of the boy on the famous “Schängel” fountain. Expect an array of concerts (classical\, jazz\, gospel) as well as nostalgic carriage rides through the enchanting Koblenz old quarter\, a perfect icing on the cake for romantic interludes. The 24 advent calendar windows on the roof of the baroque town hall are another sure way to get every visitor into the Christmas spirit. Located where the Moselle joins the Rhine\, Koblenz is a center for some of the best wines in Germany\, a key ingredient for some delicious red or white Glühwein. (Breakfast\, Lunch\, and Dinner provided) \nDecember 5th – Cologne\, Germany\nContinue along the Rhine this morning; arrive in Cologne and disembark for a walking tour. Stroll through Old Town past St. Martin’s Church\, and spend some time inside Cologne’s Dom\, a remarkable Gothic cathedral whose construction began in 1248 and was only completed in 1880. Explore the dockside taverns\, cafés and shops on your own. As always\, your Program Director can help you plan your free time. Dinner is served aboard and we remain docked until late evening.
